I would wager that a lot of people who come across this post from search engines will be seeking a way to protect themselves from stress. I happen to believe that for most people, that’s a very bad idea.
I need stress.
I just do. Not the kind of stress where if I slip up, a bunch of people die, or the stress of knowing if I will be able to feed myself tomorrow. That kind of stress wears you down and even kills you. But there is a healthy form of stress, one that empowers you...
In my experience, when you try to protect someone from stress (like your kids), you end up diminishing their capacity to handle stress. And that’s not a very helpful skillset to take into today’s world. Exposure to stress stimulates growth. It creates a cycle of stress, growth, recovery. Rinse and repeat.
So how are you doing on this?
