Be Dispensable

If you’re an employee, conventional wisdom says you should be indispensible.   I disagree.

If you’re indispensible, you’ll always be stuck in the same job at the same level.   Always be working to another level up in terms of skill sets.  If you reach a spot in your current company where you can’t go higher, someone else will always find a spot for you.

The same holds true if you’re an entrepreneur.  If you’re indispensible, you have a business that will never scale, and will be very difficult to sell.

Want to move up to bigger prosperity?  Be dispensable.

  1. Great advice. Remember that you never know what’s around the corner – disability or death will force you to be ‘dispensable’. Make sure you have your succession planning in place – better to plan than react!

  7. Perfect timing for this.  A conversation I was JUST having with my 22 yr old daughter who has so much to give the right company and achieve for herself! Thank you and I’ve shared with her as well.  Many days it seems as though you write just for me LOL -Thanks RG

  9. The word indispensable seem to come from a lack way of thinking.  You want to stay were your at because you are “safe”.  But if you are safe today, tomorrow your already behind the 8-ball.  Agree?

  17. Sorry, can someone explain this phrase “If you reach a spot in your current company where you can’t go higher, someone else will always find a spot for you”.
I can’t quite understand the meaning of it.

He means that if you have reached the highest post in a particular company not befitting to use your optimum potentials;either you shall find a much more challenging position elsewhere or other employers spot you to offer much more challenging position befitting your potentials and worth !

Absolutely!  When we’ve reached our full potential in one role, it’s time to go somewhere where we’ll be challenged to be more & do more.

  23. work to retire! Especially as an entrepreneur, I want other folks to take over the grunt work, so I can move on to the next thng, the next challenge – and make myself dispensable there too, and move on….
Another word for “indispensable” is “stuck in a rut”.

  25. Hi Randy,
Since you announce Risky is the New Safe book, I actually hadn’t been commenting a lot. You know, I saw the video and was struck. I couldn’t imagine you will up come with the book so soon. So I was struck once more. But I know you have reached your golden age and this  is the time for me to follow with all my attention.  You can’t imagine how deep your posts are this days. They are like prophecies.  Thanks for all. Live long.
