This or Something Better

Posted By: Randy GageMay 28, 2009

Recently we’ve been talking about when to quit, and when to hang on.  An important part of the equation is being willing to accept different outcomes.

I didn’t want my restaurant to fail.  But that failure started me on the path to business success in other areas.  I didn’t want dysfunctional, unhappy relationships.  But those relationships are what opened me up to getting counseling, which ultimately opened me up to receive true love.  I didn’t want illness.  But that is what now enables me to celebrate life.

Success and happiness are rarely a journey from point A to point B.  It’s usually something closer to a trip from point A to K, to D, to W, to M, a stop by Z, and then on to B.  And that’s the journey we all must relish.

When we set our goals, dreams and outcomes, we must do so with an attitude of, “This or something better.”

  1. SO true, Randy! It's possible to be TOO fixated on a specific goal, when there's something better available.

There's also a big difference between a lackadaisical "whatever will be, will be" attitude, and a proactive "I can use this situation to get someplace better" approach. "This or something better!" sums it up nicely. Thanks!

  2. And the 'this or something better' is ideal for our daily affirmations, too.

Alan Cohen has written some great stuff that when affirmed daily brings about the attitudes and mindset important to move to the Prosperity Mind.

    And this or something better!

  3. Isn't it funny - we never want to fail, lose or quit. But in doing so is where we learn a NEW skill and NEW way and begin to succeed.

We all have to fall in order to get up. Staying focused on where we want to be is hard at times but we have to look at something as it may as be where we want to end up no matter how tall the mountains get. CLIMB !!!

  4. Hi Randy....I like that....This or something better ....I never think of success and happiness together.....why? Well if someone says to me that they are successful and really happy to me it seems like a final statement and I find myself always asking them...well dont you want more?

I prefer to say I am successful and full of joy. I start each day saying I've arrived and then get as much as I can out of that day....Joy for me starts and finishes but is ongoing....Happiness is too final...

    What dya think master ??

  5. I was reading recently that "Every change is for the better", and whereas I struggle with that (of course), by looking back, I could see that every change put me on a different course that WAS for the better.

So, I could learn to ALWAYS accept that change as always for the better.

Interesting... I started to think about that; this "economic crisis" will likely put us on a BETTER path; diseases often make us MORE aware of what causes them. AIDS had made us wake up to the people we have brushed under the rug in our society.

It has been a really interesting perspective.

  6. Everything I am today is a result of "messy trajectories." By observing the lesson (sometimes having had one or two presented in different guises until I "got" it) and then moving forward with my renewed perspective, evolution has occured.

I am grateful for my tangents, even as I struggled "during" their experiences.

  7. Randy,

I must say you hit the bullseye most every time. I hate to say it but I am learning more from both you and Eric Worre than I am from my monthly membership with IlearningGlobal, or any other program for that matter. Every morning I start out my day with the both of you. Keep up the good work.

  8. Hey Randy,

Great post, I have just realized that I must move on myself! Let go and create the vacuum, in comes something better!

  9. I like this advice. Sounds like you're saying to keep hustling, and be grateful for, or at least understanding of what comes your way, and taking what you get productively and constructively.

Sometimes there's too much "stay positive" bullshit, its too late when the negativity is already there. But by looking for the off-shoot or as Randy Pouche said, "the indirect learning" you get from it, you can trun it around without feeling bipolar in the process.

  10. Great post, as always. You have mentioned the counseling you received in the past. Could you talk a little more about that? How did you find the counselor you used? When is counseling appropriate and when is it not?

    Thanks!

  11. I regularly remind myself that without the valleys of life I cannot appreciate the mountain tops. Contrast gives life meaning.
