Whenever I do town halls or Q&A sessions, some of the most frequent questions are about the books that influenced me, which ones I’m reading now, and why. Seems like this would be a great time to discuss the most impactful books I read in 2019.

Your Title Doesn’t Define You

Imagine this scenario: You’re a young gun, hired by Hot, Trendy, Innovative Company, Inc., a big international company with a powerful reputation. People who work for this company are revered and respected in the space. You join with your youthful idealism and begin working your way up the corporate ladder. A few years later, you stumble across information that the company engaged in some improper financial accounting. Now you’re pondering what your proper course of action should be: Report the bad behavior and risk career reprisals, or forget you saw this and leave the decision for someone else. Do you think your course of action would be influenced if you had a Hot, Trendy, Innovative Company, Inc. logo on your forearm?

If everyone on earth had to do three chin-ups to save their lives tomorrow – it would be an extinction level event. If that doesn’t frighten you, it should. And if you’re one of the 97 percent of people who couldn’t do three chin-ups to save your life – you should be terrified.

Don’t Volunteer for a Lobotomy

Every time you apply a label to yourself, you incrementally lower your IQ. Because once you brand yourself with a label – you have created an identity for yourself. Once you create an identity for yourself – it’s human nature to instinctively, impulsively, and unconsciously defend that identity.

Hope, Dope, and a Dead Pope

It was spring, 2005 and I was sitting in a coffeeshop in Amsterdam toking up some sinsemilla, while the TV on the wall played images of people mourning the death of Pope John Paul II. Maybe it was the dope, but I was profoundly melancholy, thinking that like so many before him, the Pope was a very spiritual, caring and well-meaning human being – who would leave a legacy of poverty, ignorance, and despair for his followers.

Hopefully by now you realize that the majority of all the programming you’re receiving daily is designed to keep you ignorant, sick, needy, victimized, lonely, and/or broke. The key to creating a new you – one that you actually like – is identifying the limiting beliefs you created from that programming and replacing them with empowering ones.

The Real Matrix

As Gary Vaynerchuk famously said, “Marketers fuck up everything.” That’s just what we do. (Yes, I am a marketer and include myself in this group.) We ruined radio and television, we ruined Internet search, we ruined email and texting, and now we’re ruining podcasts and social media. (And if we can’t end the affliction of robocalls, we’ve ruined cell phones too.)
