Can You Help Save the World?

No joke. I want to know if you can help save the world.

In this recent post I made the case that you have a strong influence on the things that happen in your life, and the few you don’t contribute to is shockingly miniscule. Most people get defensive at that statement and immediately jump to some exception to argue against it. (Like a random meteorite landing on your garage.) This is a bad premise and an extremely harmful life strategy, because there are almost always outlier exceptions to everything. More importantly, by making this argument you’re refusing to accept responsibility for your life. The logical conclusion to this line of thinking takes you to outlandish assumptions like, “I can’t control that an earthquake killed innocent people, so it’s not my fault that I am emotionally abusive to my spouse.”

In the last post we explored the emotional payoff you can receive from victimhood. Let’s expand the view and look at the bigger picture of how you co-create almost everything in your life: the stuff that makes you happy – and the stuff that makes you miserable.

The Fake Reward of Being a Victim

Funny coincidence: I’m working with two different writers in my author apprentice program and yesterday gave the same advice to both of them. Specifically, that for their (very different) books to really help their readers, they need to examine, explore, and expose the many “payoffs” people get by being a victim. Because if someone doesn’t recognize they’re getting some type of emotional reward, they can’t stop bringing more victim situations into their life.

Give Yourself a Fresh Start

In the latest episode of my podcast, we look at the issue of buying into the stories that others create for you. It could be your parents who want you to be a doctor or lawyer. Maybe your significant other who tries to talk you out of making a bold career choice. Or it could be your circle of friends who sell you the belief that everyone in the group belongs there, and neither you or anyone else is talented enough to bust out of it. That leads us to lesson number one…

Don’t Die Until You’re Done

First, thanks for all the love on the last post about Reinventing the World. Let’s continue the discussion, in particular the part about you perhaps feeling like you’re not ready to step up and face the daunting challenges in front of us right now. In the rational, logical sense, you’re correct. Most likely, you’re not ready right now. Because no one is. But therein lies the most intoxicating, alluring, and sensational element of living – the challenge, growth, and evolution we can choose to experience.
