Getting to the Best Version of You

Posted By: Randy GageApril 5, 2025

Went home to visit my mom and she surprised me with some childhood nostalgia, including my second-grade report card.  We had a laugh because the teacher wasn’t overly impressed with my writing skills.

Since I’ve authored 15 bestsellers, which have been translated into more than 25 languages, this presents a perfect chance to throw shade on Mrs. Kissinger for not recognizing the brilliant prodigy she had access to.

But that wouldn’t be fair…

Because Mrs. Kissinger was right. (As were the other teachers who noted my poor writing skills.)  Looking back at my first six books, they were dreadful.

Not that they don’t offer some insights and provide value – they do. But they’re terribly written.  My later books improved because of a conscious decision to improve my writing skills and hire quality editors.  So today I’m reflecting on those teachers with gratitude.

That report card reveals three simple yet profound insights that can serve you in living a prosperous life…

  • Surround yourself with people who care enough about you to tell you the truth. (With your highest good in mind, done in a positive way.)
  • Be humble enough to accept feedback and doing the work to improve.
  • Remember that it’s never about where you start but where you go to.

Peace,

- RG

  1. Fun stuff Randy, read a book recently about not beating yourself up too much and appreciate your talents, something we rarely do.. but I've always had a natural writing ability.. can sit down and knock out a profile or travel experience no problem, can do it a little better with a 3 or 4 beer buzz, but can do it sober as well, one time had that buzz going on, words and creativity just flowing, hit save and it went blip, and lost everything, screamed, cats took off, ha ha.. web gal talked me down, said try and recall what you wrote.. and I did, and it was better with my recall.. love the cloud now, saves automatically.. cheers Napa David

  2. In writing, both ideas and their expression matter, but which holds more weight? Ideas arise from critical thinking, a skill that’s harder to teach and develop. In contrast, the rules for crafting a coherent text are typically part of the syllabus, which a teacher assesses. To avoid discouraging students, it’s important to award marks for both content and writing. True willpower is shown by students who are humble enough to accept the truth about their results and, without giving up, continue making efforts to improve.

Your example of combining self-work with professional guidance from quality editors is inspiring.

April 6 is your birthday. Congratulations! Many more happy returns of the day. With each year, you become more legendary. May your new year unfold like a cherished vision board — or even better — rich in picturesque details, filled with precious moments, and touched by wonder and grace.
