The Upgrades that Upgrade You

Posted By: Randy GageFebruary 6, 2026

Most people don’t hate luxury.  They hate what it exposes about their own limiting beliefs.

That’s why they label elevated living as “exorbitant,” “extravagant,” “wasteful,” or “out of touch”—while proudly chasing $2-off coupons like it’s a moral achievement.

Cheapness has been rebranded in popular culture as virtue. But that’s like putting frosting on a burnt cake. (And why most people are living small, fearful lives.)

As I shared in this last post, some people wear cheapness as though it’s a badge of honor.  As if suffering is a sign of intelligence, or denying yourself comfort somehow proves character. FFS!

Being prudent with money is a virtue.  Being cheap with money diminishes you.

If you build your identity around always choosing the lowest price, you aren’t being disciplined—you’re reinforcing poverty consciousness. And you’re living a life that’s out of alignment with the force that created you.

To be clear, I’m not suggesting reckless spending, financing impulses with credit, or living beyond your means. (Unless you enjoy it and can afford it.) I’m talking about people who turn frugality into a personality trait.

  • They brag about flying coach because “it’s just a seat.”
  • They stay in bargain hotels because “you’re only there to sleep.”
  • They say things like, “A car just gets you from point A to point B,” or “I can’t believe you wasted money on that.”

What they refuse to pay for eventually shows up as limited thinking and a diminished life.

Discomfort has been reframed as discipline. And anyone who pays for ease, beauty, or space is labeled irresponsible — by people who are exhausted, cramped, and secretly resentful. The truth? Some things cost more because they give you more. And pretending otherwise is just financial cosplay.

Money and material things won’t buy you happiness—but they can enable creative expression, energy, clarity, and health. And those things absolutely make life better.

Once you’ve experienced what it’s like to arrive rested instead of wrecked, inspired instead of irritated, expanded instead of compressed, you realize some upgrades aren’t indulgences. Many can make you happier, improve your health, help you be more productive, or simply send a message that you value yourself.

So I thought it would be fun—and useful—to share with you some items I label extravagant necessities. These are purchases and decisions that often get judged by others, but consistently upgrade your health, productivity, and quality of life.

Some items on the list are from companies I represent or consult with; others are just items I’ve discovered along my prosperity journey. Some are affordable. Some are high-ticket. All are things I personally use and recommend—and that I believe are worth upgrading to as soon as it’s financially prudent for you.

Extravagant Necessities: Upgrades that Compound

(In no particular order)

1. Herman Miller Ergonomic Office Chair

If you don’t spend much time at a desk and have no back issues, skip this. But if you sit for hours—or inherited spinal stenosis like I did—this is one of the best investments you’ll ever make.

It’s cheaper than surgery. Cheaper than chronic pain. And cheaper than losing productive years of your life. The perfect match of form, function, and beauty.

2. Vitamix Professional Grade blender

This unit has laser-cut, stainless-steel blades can power through fibrous produce, frozen fruit, ice and nuts.  Makes juicing and smoothies effortlessly, which means you consume more of them

3. Executive Health Screening

If you’re 50 or older, this can literally save your life.

I use Human Longevity Clinic in San Diego. (They also have clinics in San Francisco and China.) The base screening includes a full-body MRI and Galleri blood work, integrating advanced imaging, genetics, biomarkers, and AI to detect issues before symptoms appear.

This is not just preventative medicine, it is also predictive medicine, because they sequence your DNA and use AI to detect life-threatening conditions at their earliest stages—even before symptoms appear.  The cost ($8–15K) is trivial compared to what it can prevent.

4. Flying First Class or Private

If travel isn’t a big part of your life, this may not matter. If it is, it matters a lot.

Airports are already designed to exhaust and annoy you. Combine that with cramped seats, noise, poor food, and zero personal space—and you arrive depleted.

Comfort, space, priority handling, better food, and quiet dramatically change how you land: rested, clear, and productive instead of fried and resentful.

For long-haul travel, true First Class on carriers like Lufthansa, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, or Cathay Pacific isn’t a luxury—it’s a performance upgrade. I’ve arrived after brutal itineraries and gone straight to work with zero jet lag. That matters.

For domestic flights, if you’re flying private, it’s tough to beat having the pilot ask you what time you want to leave tomorrow.  For the long-haul international trips, in many cases it’s a better experience to fly commercial, but with the great carriers who have true First Class service, such as Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, Emirates, or Cathay Pacific. (Even Turkish Airlines who only offers Business Class, but an experience better than many airlines offer in First.)

5. Quality Luggage

Good luggage isn’t about status—it’s about reducing friction and physical strain.  High-quality wheels, intelligent compartments, and durability eliminate stress. Because of my back issues, this single upgrade removed years of travel pain. That’s not indulgence. That’s intelligent design solving a real problem.

For my taste, TUMI is the best luggage in the world and the quality is impeccable.  They have a TUMI roller board and TUMI Garment bag

I also love Luggage Forward. They’ll send air bills, so you pack your suitcase for pickup a few days before your trip and it will be waiting for you at your hotel.  Then they’ll pick it up at the end of your trip and it will arrive via UPS or FedEx a few days after you get home.  It can cost $300 or $400.  But this saves you having to arrive 30-40 minutes earlier to check your luggage, and waiting 30-40 at your destination airport, waiting for it to come around on the carousel.

6. Toto NEOREST toilet with bidet

There’s no delicate way to say this: toilet paper alone is primitive. If you’re not using a bidet, it’s quite possible that you’re a savage, filthy, and uncouth barbarian. (I’ll watch for you on the next Game of Thrones!)

Once you switch to a bidet, you’ll never go back. They’re expensive to buy, install, and service. Do it anyway. Hygiene, comfort, and daily quality of life matter more than pretending this is frivolous.

7. Oral Health Upgrades

My dentist kept pushing the Waterpik cordless flosser on me for years.  I finally relented and was amazed.  If you have any doubt, floss and brush your teeth like normal, then use the Waterpik.  When you see all the extra food particles in your sink, you’ll never want to go without one again.  Likewise going from a manual toothbrush to the Oral B electric toothbrush does wonders for you mouth health. Extra benefit: My teeth and gums used to be so sensitive that semi-annual dental hygiene appointments used to be 60 minutes of torture. Now they’re 45 minutes of comfortable meditating.

8. Weekly Massage

If everyone on Earth got a massage every week, there would be no war. Massage improves circulation, flexibility, recovery, detoxification, and mental calm. I’m partial to Thai massage for the stretching, but any skilled practitioner delivers massive returns in energy and clarity.

This next category matters more than any other, because nothing compounds—or collapses—your life faster than your health.

9. Strategic Premium Nutrition:

Most people are shocked to learn that I spend more than $1,500 a month on nutritional supplements. But it’s arguably the most important investment of anything on this list.

My blood work is optimal. My executive health screening came back perfect. Chronologically, my body is getting younger.

Key pillars of my wellness routine include:

Seed-Sourced Nutrition from Rain International

Seeds contain 20-30 times more nutrients than the fruit, vegetable, or plant they grow into. So I take almost 10 products daily from Rain International, which produces seed-sourced nutrition. The critical ones that most people are missing are the next four:

Soul and Soul Red. Take one of each every day for the rest of your life. (If both aren’t available in your country, take two of the one that is.) They reduce inflammation, the hidden killer.  The vast majority of people suffer from inflammation, but most don’t know it.  When your body is inflamed, you will have a harder time losing weight and a difficult time building muscle.  You will recover slower. And if you have any medical condition or disease, inflammation makes it worse. If you doubt that, Google or Chat GPT, “What effect does inflammation have on [disease]?” The results will shock you.

Core. The ultimate greens formula. One serving is equivalent to seven servings of vegetables. A smoothie or juice from a health store with these ingredients would cost you $10-15. Take one a day, or two when you want to clean your blood.

Beat. A cardiovascular powerhouse, amazing for oxygen in the blood, circulation, and libido. Take one sachet daily and do an additional one before any athletic activity.

A Glutathione Precursor from Immunotec

The most important nutrient for strengthening your immunity is glutathione.  Glutathione, present in every cell in your body, is considered the master antioxidant.  But you can’t supplement it, because your body can’t process it.  The researchers at Immunotec discovered a protein isolate that glutathione levels and promotes immune-enhancing activity. Their Immunocal is a glutathione precursor that allows your body to manufacture its own glutathione the way it should be.

Immunocal been listed in the Physician’s Desk Reference (PDR) and Compendium of Pharmaceutical Specialties (CPS) for decades yet almost no one outside of medical professionals are aware of it. There is a regular version, a Platinum version for preventing calcium loss, and Immunocal Sport.  I take two packets of the Sport version every day.

Balance Oil to correct Omega-3/Omega-6 ratios

Almost 15 years ago, I was with the co-founder of Zinzino, and she suggested I take a blood test to measure my ratio of Omega oils, the good versus the bad.  You want optimal cell membrane fluidity—which means that the right fats are in the ideal amounts in your cell membrane, making it soft and flexible vs hard and rigid. Omega 6 and Omega 3 at 3:1 ratio is the best marker to let you know it is achieved.

About two weeks later I got back the results which basically said, “HTF are you not dead already!?” I’m kidding about the language, but my results really were that terrible. I’ve since learned the 97 percent of people are out of balance in this area.

This same ratio is a great marker for the proper production of signaling molecules (eicosanoids) which regulates your inflammatory response system. Eicosanoids from Omega 6 activates and eicosanoids from Omega 3 deactivates the inflammation response.  Healthy balance equals healthy cells. This link is for their combo offer of the initial blood test, a follow-up one top measure your progress, and two bottles of the Premium Balance Oil, which is what I take daily.

10. The Ultimate Upgrade: Proximity & Coaching

This belongs on the list because proximity and standards are the ultimate upgrade. (And I would be remiss to do a list about investments for a prosperous life and not mentioning this.) Your environment, standards, and thinking determine your ceiling. That’s why I created Breakthrough U, my mastermind and coaching accelerator. No pitch here. Read the page. You’ll know if it’s for you.

Extravagant necessities aren’t about status. They’re about the standard and value you set for yourself.

Please. Stop confusing deprivation with virtue.  Upgrade your thinking—and then upgrade your life accordingly.

Peace,

- RG
