What Story Are You Selling Yourself?

Posted By: Randy GageApril 11, 2025

Why get on that treadmill or go jogging in the rain when you can simply buy a bigger belt and have the tailor let out that suit?

Why realistically face your mounting debt when the credit card companies and automakers are willing to keep increasing your credit limit?

Why confront the endless drama of relationship work, therapy, and possible divorce when you can easily find a side piece on a hookup app?

Why indeed?

Well, I don’t know about you, but one thing I’ve fought in the past, is a tendency to stay with a current scenario that is way less than ideal, instead of doing the work required to change.

Even though I knew the change would be better for me.

And if I go by what I see in my seminars and coaching programs, most people do not make big, necessary changes in their lives until that change is the less comfortable option. Or if we’re being totally honest, until the pain of denial has reached the crisis stage.

So why do we act in such a foolish way?

Most of the time it’s self-sabotage.  Which leads to an even more obvious question: Why would we self-sabotage our health, happiness, or prosperity? (Or all three.)

Self-worth issues.

As you’ve likely heard me say 3,128 times before…the Universe doesn’t give you the prosperity you deserve – it gives you the prosperity you believe you deserve. Let’s up it to 3,130, for the people in the back…

The Universe doesn’t give you the prosperity you deserve – it gives you the prosperity you believe you deserve.

What you believe about your life is going to be the life you manifest. Period, end of story.

But if you change your beliefs, you can create a new and better story. One of those “lived happily ever after” stories you read as a kid.

When your life isn’t working the way you would like, that’s a sign that you probably sold yourself the wrong story.  To be clear, it’s a story someone or something sold you first. Likely your parents, organized religion, the education system, social media and the datasphere, or all the above. But it’s important to recognize that you bought the story from them, and then re-sold it to yourself.

  • Think relationships are tumultuous? You sold that story to yourself.
  • Think you’re powerless over an addiction? You sold that story to yourself.
  • Think you only have the skills to earn 50k a year? You sold that story to yourself.

It’s so easy to buy this kind of bullshit because you are assaulted with thousands of mind viruses trying to sell you stories like these every day.  (I’m supposed to be the prosperity guru, and yet I still sometimes must catch myself from getting sucked into a bad story.)

And speaking of stories, here’s a funny one…

Just hired a college student this week to work on a project with me.  Was having a coffee with a friend discussing the situation and he asked me what I was paying him. I shared the amount and he burst out…

“WTF is wrong with you! You just gave a kid who hasn’t even finished college yet, his first job…and you’re paying him more than $70,000 a year. Why did you do that.”

The answer shocked my friend and might shock you. I paid him that amount because that’s what he asked for.  If he believes he’s worth that, he’s probably worth that.  (And if he’s as good as I hope he is, he’ll be earning twice what his professors do by this time next year.)

All because he sold himself a better story than most people sell themselves.

As I told you in this post, every day you wake up and the Universe has one simple, yet profound question for you...

How much prosperity are you willing to accept today?

Yet when presented by this all-you-can-eat buffet, it’s shocking how many people just nibble off a few bites.  When I stopped buying into the bullshit stories society wanted to sell me, I discovered one of the most profound, mind-blowing, and shocking truths about money and prosperity imaginable.  Allow me to reveal it to you now…

It is easier to earn a lot of money quickly than a little amount of money slowly.

Seriously. If you don’t believe me, you’ve been brainwashed and need some serious deprogramming. (And I’m not saying that to be snarky, but because I care about you and want you to know the truth.)

It’s easier to sell a Bugatti for $3 million than to sell a Kia for $25,000.    It’s easier to market a $40,000 speech than a $5,000 one.  It’s easier to sell a million-dollar home than a $125,000 one.  If you have any doubts, speak to someone with domain expertise in these areas and they’ll confirm it’s true.

It is easier to earn a lot of money quickly than a little amount of money slowly.

Yet sometimes I feel like I’m standing on a street corner trying to hand out $100 bills and no one will take them from me. ‍‍‍ No joke.

Warning: I’m about to rant for the next ten paragraphs or so. Not to relieve my personal frustration, okay maybe a little of that, but because there are some million-dollar truth bombs for you…

I’ve spoken to more than 2 million people across more than 50 countries at very high fees. I can teach virtually anyone with decent platform skills how to build a successful speaking practice. Yet most speakers are glorified Toastmasters, struggling along doing gigs for fees from a rubber chicken lunch to $3,000.

Why?

Because they won’t invest in their career.  They’re afraid if they raise their fee from $1,500 to $2,000, they will lose clients. When if they jumped their fee to 10 or 15k, they’d attract new and better clients.  But they bought the story that it’s easier to earn a little amount of money slowly.

I’ve trained more millionaires in network marketing than anyone on Earth. Literally thousands of them. Produced more than $22 billion in revenue for my team, clients, and protégées. I can teach virtually anyone who is coachable and willing to work, how to build a million-dollar distributorship.  Really. Yet I probably extend an invitation to personally mentor two or three people a week and most of them turn me down without a second thought.

Why?

Because someone sold them a story about being an employee and they bought it.  They simply can’t make the mental leap to becoming an entrepreneur.  Or, they were warned against the “get rich quick” scams – but no one taught them about the “stay broke for the rest of your fucking life” scams.

Then there’s the issue of why so many people who do join network marketing companies, struggle to earn big money in a platform offering unlimited earning ability.  Sometimes, it’s because they haven’t received the right training to learn the necessary skills.  But more often, it’s because they’ve unknowingly set a subconscious mental ceiling on how much success they will allow themselves.

I’ve written 15 books, all of them bestsellers. More than 5 million books sold, translated into more than 25 languages. I can teach virtually anyone with decent writing skills, how to write a successful non-fiction book that can put them on the map.  Yet most people who say they want to write a book never do.  Or they slap together some slop, self-publish it, and fill their garage with dusty copies.

Why?

The story they sold themselves. They have poverty consciousness and as a result, won’t invest in themselves.

  • Why do people stay in negative, toxic, or even abusive relationships? Because they bought the wrong story.
  • Why do 10 times more people apply for a $40k job than apply for a $400k job? Because they bought the wrong story.
  • Why do you (fill in the blank)? Because you bought the wrong story.

The greatest prosperity gift you can give the world is not settling for a life you’re unhappy with.

You, me, and everyone else on Earth was born to be healthy, happy, and prosperous.  It is your birthright.  And if you don’t claim that birthright, it’s an insult to the force that created you.

What stories have you been selling yourself? Is it time to start selling yourself some better ones?

Peace,

- RG

  1. The big step out of misery and telling the wrong story was painful. Even More painful than staying with poisoning environment.
What a feeling, after taking it! I met one Guardian Angel saying:" Be thankful for the past, trust for the Future."
    The whole New Story.

  2. I was sold the story "Poverty, that to become rich you need to have connections with serious people, that having many friends and relationships is not very good, that to buy a house you need to work your whole life at a boring job, that to become rich you need to be born rich, all rich people live on loans for millions, they all get sick, they are bad, that getting an education is not necessary, the main thing is to have a job (and what kind ...), that you need to work 24/7, so that later you will be rewarded. You can't live the way you want, otherwise what will others think of you." It will sound strange, but I did not agree with all this, but I did not understand that I lived with it. Fortunately, although I realized this, I am at the stage of searching for the implementation of what will help me achieve freedom.(Google translate)

    1. What is 'freedom'? It means living the way you want. Does it mean an easier life? No. Even after getting your dream job, you still have day-to-day duties. To stay relevant, continual learning (or hiring specialists) is essential. Rights come with obligations. There are always consequences and bills to be paid for every choice. But, for sure, the reward of making a personal choice is worth it.

  3. This is gold, no, actually platinum. Thank you for the reminders which I seem to need more than I should. Our mindset determines our outcomes.

    Keep 'em coming.

  4. I've always thought the only security in life & love is what you create for yourself! You just laid it out on a big flashing screen to stop playing small and to stop accepting mediocrity!

  5. Having read this post and summarized my beliefs about earnings, here's the endless list that guides me:
    1) Everyone sells something. Employees exchange services for a fixed salary, while entrepreneurs have more varied returns (not always high).
    2) There’s a market price. No one will pay more than a product's actual worth.
    3) If you want more, "wish you were better" and improve. Don’t hide behind a bigger suit — nothing is static, and weaknesses grow if ignored.
    4) Urgency increases the price.
    5) If your offering is underrated, it may mean you haven’t communicated its value properly.
    6) Never play on emotions. They cloud the perception of the actual product. People may act as though they’re "under hypnosis," driven by their own emotions and a hope for satisfaction that isn’t implied by the product. In the long run, this harms others and damages reputation of a service provider.
    7) Personal preferences matter and may end up with some tips.
    8) There’s always something that causes doubt. To bargain or not? Respect yourself. Consider the effort it took to become the person cable of creating the product.
    9) Any contract you enter must be fulfilled responsibly. You can’t quit halfway. Choose wisely.

  6. I'm finding that awareness plays a big role in my decisions, especially regarding my surroundings, yes, i admit, there was some situations and people that i did make stupid decisions and i did sabotage myself and i did sold myself wrong stupid storys! But, I believe that recognizing dissatisfaction is the first step towards positive change. Remaining in an unfulfilling situation doesn't feel like an option anymore, to old for that shit show. Growth and progress are important to me, and that requires seeking out environments that support those values. Always encourage myself to reflect on my current situation and identify areas for potential improvement.
Focusing on personal growth and creating a positive environment is key, away from drama, prioritize my own happiness and well-being. Building genuine connections with those who uplift and inspire me is important and choosing to invest my energy in experiences that bring me joy.
