A good way to find out is to ask someone who has it. That someone would be Bob Burg. Bob has been influencing audiences from the platform for decades. However, there are plenty of cruel middle class and poor people who'd rather that everyone were miserable than have any friends, family, or colleagues be happier than them.
They believe they are slaves to money, their pasts, and their present circumstances.
It's not true, but if you believe something enough, it might as well be.
However, money and power does not make people cruel. It only amplifies what is there.
There are a lot of people who do not trust themselves and are envious of others who have achieved something they value but did not have the courage to achieve themselves.
There are people in religion, education, government, Unions, even companies, and other organizations who cater to this mentality.
The only purpose it serves is to chain people down.
It's people engaging in a co-dependent Master and Slave sort of relationship which isn't goo for anyone.
This country was built on the notion of Individual fulfillment, accomplishment, and trade.
While I do not agree with your idea of an Illuminati conspiracy, there are some people who can and do want to take this away, but I am more concerned about the neighbor down the street forming a mob, than someone higher up.
