Is Poverty a Sin?

Posted By: Randy GageFebruary 23, 2010

In yesterday’s post I said poverty was a sin.  Not surprisingly a few of you took umbrage to that.   But I stand by the statement.  Here’s why:

First I should clarify I don’t think it’s a sin to be born poor.  But it is a sin to stay that way.

Now it also would help if we define what sin actually means.  Of course most people would go with some kind of Biblical frame of reference for this.  But if you go back to the original Bible, which was written in Aramaic, the actual translation of sin means to “miss the mark.”

If you are a student of the Course in Miracles, then you know they would define sin as a lack of love.  I’m okay with either of these translations.  Because I believe that when we live in lack, we are missing the mark and missing the love our creator has for us.

When you are prosperous you are hitting the mark and accepting the love you are meant to have.  That’s why I say you were born to be rich.  So you up for that?  If you are, here's a follow up post: https://randygage.com/poverty-is-a-sin/

  1. I was born poor and struggled to be whealthy . I trained myself in a lucrative profession and became whealthy.
Then I choosed not to move on and found myself not prepared for abundance and prosperity and became a abuser to drinks.

I lost all and chosed for tooooo many years to be poor and a victim for circumstances that most of them really never had existed.

I suddenly woke up last year and start to study prosperity and recieved tools through your system and found the path.

In the mean time I gain prosperity today I work hard for bring people with me on the way to a extraordinary life.

Thank you Randy , its been a pleasure to meet you and follow your "simply" way. Simpel but not effordless if I communicate okey ?

  2. I would even go a step further and say that it's a sin to not give 100% to any endeavor you are involved with. If you are a singer, shouldn't you work hard to become the best that you can possibly be? As a parent, you should work hard to be the best parent possible for your kids (and yourself). To neglect and fall short of that is a sin also in my opinion.

  3. Not only am I up for being rich, it's my birthright! .. And by BEING rich I help and inspire others to do the same. And what greater fulfillment in Life is there than to inspire others to greatness, possibility and living their dream?

So now it's a matter of accepting that I'm rich and taking the action.. NOW.

    Thanks Randy.

  4. I agree poverty is a sin, but people need someone to guide them and help them out of these conditions, that is if they want to be helped. Now what should those of us not in poverty, but not in prosperity focus on to get to the prosperous area-I know study and read books, etc but that sometimes is not eough. How aobut sharing some of the things that you did to get to where you are now-this would be greatly appreciated

    PS-See you at the Opera

  5. Randy... I do agree that it's a "sin" (such a STRONG word- makes me squirm in my seat just writing it - but it's gets the message across) if the person cannot afford the basis necessities in life and they are asking the government/family/friends for help when they are completely able bodied people... then yes it is a sin! 100% yes!

But however if they are living within their means, not knowing any better (i.e. country people in 3rd world countries) and are completely happy & content then no it is not a sin.

Rich does not necessarily have to mean money.

    IMHO!

  6. In my opinion, it's a sin to be poor in spirit... when we know there's a life of abundance that is possible and available to us, and we deliberately turn away, choosing to ignore the many gifts and possibilities that are available for us. That, I believe, is the sin.

  7. Randy,

This is such a great post. Our Minister Nancy Norman was saying last night "That if you ask most people about money and the Bible, they will tell you that, "money is the root of all evil". She stated that the Bible says the LOVE of money is the root of all evil." To us this means that we forget every thing else about prosperity, but money and that is our only focus. We believe money is a part of prosperity.

We recently read the book, "The Science of Getting Rich", by Wallace Wattles. Written in 1910 the book teaches that it is a sin to stay poor. That in every area of our life it is required that we become successful.

Your blog is great. Hope to see you in South Florida soon,
    Jim Story

    1. 1Corinthians 4:11, 2Corinthians 6:10,..... does it mean Paul lacked faith? ........ Revelation 2:9. did Jesus get it wrong when He stated they were rich in their poverty and not calling poverty sin ? Jesus definition of riches didn't come from Wall St rather what He has done in us ....2Corinthians 4:7. He is rich in grace , rich in mercy etc.
Jesus said the "poor will always be with us" Its our responsibility to help the needy Ephesians 4:27. Galatians 2:10.
Many poor christians around the world live under authoritative governments thus not allowing them live a life we sometimes take for granted in the western world. Many have become poor because of natural disasters , earthquakes, floods etc.
I do believe christians can be rich 1Timothy 6:17-19,Yet Paul states they have a responsibility to do good !
Jesus says it best in Luke 12:15. Material wealth is not blessedness.
Christians are warned re pursuing material wealth 1Timothy 6:5,9....Matthew 6:33 :But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and ALL these thing will be ADDED to you.

  8. Randy I agree. As I have said many times, we are made in the Image of God. No where does God portray poverty whether it is His creation or the explanation of the afterlife. Everything He does is top of the line.

    1. Foxes have holes, birds have next but the son o ffc man has no where to lay his head,,Luke 9:58
He did not have a villa in in town or an elaborate escort team. He was constantly on the move without luggage, or caravan..riches were not His goal souls were. Anyone can get rich..but who can win a soul

  9. Randy,

After learning about psychology and human behavior in an effort to explore myself and understand others, I wonder if poverty could be considered a mental illness? It cripples people mentally and physically the way depression and other maladies of the mind do.

If that's rash, let me know.

    -Tom

  10. Perhaps that's a bit rash. But we do know that prosperity isn't money and things; it is a state of mind. And poverty isn't an absence of money and things; it is a state of mind also.

    -RG

  11. It is a sin not to believe what God has planted in us, claiming that what has been is only what it is, and not stepping out in faith from the comfort zone into the unknown. Always enjoy your post. Look forward to the next one. S

  12. I see.

That means that a change in mindset can result in changing one's life.

    Been working on that everyday.

    Thanks Randy.

    1. People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. (NIV, 1 Timothy 6:9-11)

  13. We were born to become God like, as we are the children of God (not a macaque))
Failure to live up to this standard is a sin in a way.
So what is it to be God like?

  14. I guess I agree, somewhat...isn't all of this relative to how you view prosperity, wealth, sin etc.. I mean I've reading the blog for about a week now and my personal opinion is that it's all in what a person's values.

I'm a single mom, and at one time was homeless with my two children. I was also 100 pounds over what I weigh now. Fast forward 10 years, I lost the weight, I'm in a townhouse, got a decent car, family is stable and I feel very blessed. I don't have half the income you may have, but I value the stability that we have been able to achieve more than anything.

Not that I think there's anything wrong with having things, people should do what's best for them. As for me, if my teenage kids still feel that I'm the go to person for their questions about life..I'm a rich woman.

  15. I TOTALLY AGREE Randy!
We were not created in the image of God to live in Poverty although He was kind enough to allow us to make our own choices...
    Thanks for sharing with us.
    Make it a great day!
    God Bless,
    -ed

  16. I feel a bit of a 'deja vu' regarding my thoughts after reading this blogged topic.... I often listen and think and when I read the word "SIN" I hear "without" translating from spanish to english. It is truly sin being poor, being undereducated, under movitated, without goals, without encouragement, sin vergüenzas - well mostly... great food for thought, Randy!

  17. Hi guys interesting Reading all this. I thing ther is mo such thing as Sin on this planet. We are Godlike beings and that meens we are Gods. And whatever way we are here on this planet is ok. You poor is ok you rich is ok too. All is just experience and we are not for ever here. Most important that one is happy and has a peace inside. Most important is to understand who we are

  18. i am all for a house falling on me before i get the message lol... you're doing a great job of getting the word out and leading... keep it up.....

  19. Ренди, после того, как я почитала ваши книги, у меня появились мечты! Да, я была бедная, и думала, что это нормально. Но сейчас я борюсь, чтоб стать богатой. Please, sorry for russian, i know english bad, but i want say about it, it is very important for me!

  20. 'Sin' has a lot of baggage that may take a long long time to unpack.

There is a 'gap' between our reality of our worthiness and our worthiness. It is in this gap that 'being' poor is far easier than 'being' rich. Poor is a great excuse for everything. Most people use the excuse 'I was born that way' as their ultimate excuse not to have to live up to any standard but the one they choose to live down to for themselves. The more faults you can find with the ‘rich’ the more excuses you pile on top of your being poor. People wall themselves off from their ultimate potential and once we begin to justify our ‘place’ based on any set of excuses or reasons we are sure and guaranteed to lose what little we had to begin with.

  21. I'd like to add that money is just the result of who we are, spiritually. In everything we do, a universal law applies that before it is physical, it is always spiritual.

And for that, I'd say that poverty in the spirit may be counted as a mental illness. Why? Because a person who consistently chooses poor thoughts matures poorly. He grows his spirit poorly and slowly it will devour his physical state. Then I'd say it is comparable to an illness we encounter in a physical state.

  22. In the past I would have taken offense to you saying poverty is a sin - but I have learned that you are right. And I just say - keep it coming Randy, I appreciate your thoughts and sharing your ideas.

  23. to be god like? WOW.... hhmmmm makes me wonder....

i walked in the living room and said let their be light and there was.... thanks to my housekeeper who thought i was asking her to turn on the lights.

i then proceeded to the kitchen and walked on water, realizing this i went to the closet and grabbed the mop.

then in a moment of silence as i pondered my god like state, i hear my housekeepers voice from upstairs, "chip damnit" and i knew i must be a god, or atleast on my way....

i feel much better... thanks for pointing that out... sometimes its the little things we miss that make the biggest differences....

  24. My name is Thomas and my wife Degdau Alla Degdau-Diedrich (Deaf) those who do not know me, I currently am the MLM Agel Enterprises, perhaps you've never heard of it ... We carry out work with a group of friends with business opportunities as a plan B, you can create a real money remaining entry) (dollars and would be happy for me that would be part of this great project.

  25. who do you think you are? the gospel is that the Lord has saved us and given us reconciliation and an amazing grace. but You false preachers speak that when you come to christ you will be given riches and money and you are exporting this message to africa and to the ends of the earth and rips the true gospel to shreads! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTc_FoELt8s. Your gospel is missing the point! you think abundance and riches are the gospel? when was it in the bible that any1 ever said I am so satisfied in the gospel because Jesus gave me a a BMW? and even when ever Jesus did give any healing or any miracle he shared his true message and that is that I have not come here to give you wealth on this earth but a life in the next! why dont you get the message in the gospels where it says "who sinned in this mans family to make him crippled?" "and christ replied this man was born like this so that my glory may be shown here today!" not some1 sinned or he sinned, thats why he does not have health and wealth. your message is a crap message

  26. Where is your evidence that poverty is a sin? Biblical evidence that is .. on this premis the work I have done in Kenya is with sinners.  These are people because of where they are born live in poverty, they love the Lord obey his word yet most die in poverty.. Do they die and end up in hell because their whole life has been lived in continual  the sin of poverty?
When  you talk about poverty I assume that you mean financial poverty?  ( there are many types of poverty) The debate rolls on about poverty  and our relationship with God and in my experience there is so much false teaching and misunderstanding in this area that it is no wonder there are so many who remain confused.  One thing I am constantly reminded of is that Jesus could have manifested as a prince in a palace but he didn't, contrary to what people like Jessy Duplantis and Creflo Dollar preach there is no evidence that Jesus was rich...   Jesus was born in a barn to humble people, when Mary and Joseph dedicated him in the temple they offered turtle doves which were not the sacrifice of the wealthy.  Jesus said foxes have holes, birds of the air have nests but the son of man has nowhere to lay his head.. who was he speaking of???? Himself of course. During Jesus public ministry Jesus used Simon Peter's mother's house as his base.  Surely if Jesus was rich he would have used his house... but the evidence suggests Jesus did not own one.  Whenever Jesus needed money ( not wanted a new car or suit) the money was available to him.  Much of what Jesus used his money for was to serve others with.  How do you measure wealth??? when you reach your first million?  if that is the measure I have a way to go but I am not in want, with the money God has given to me I am determined to be a good steward, the wealth I desire is to enhance the Kingdom

  28. Biblical prosperity is what we should aspire to and yes business men and women with the greatest influence should be born again, the church should have a financial voice but the current teaching about prosperity that are often put forward on God TV is twisted......God has given us the ability to get wealth not to get the latest or because we want to show we are rich but to establish and advance the kingdom of God on planet earth

  31. I have heard preachers say that it is a sin to be poor and have to ask what Bible are they reading so when Jesus told the rich young ruler to sell all he had and give to the poor that would make him what? Poor. Would Jesus really tell him to sin?  Poverty isn’t comfortable and it isn’t something we want or choose but the reality is that throughout Jesus ministry he preached about the deceitfulness of wealth and riches and admonished the wealthy to share their wealth with the poor.  Today we have people drawn to the ministry because of the financial benefits, the fame and acclaim, you can become a multi millionaire with countless assets and above all be popular as long as you preach a popular message.  Make up your mind Randy; it's not a sin to be poor but it is to remain poor????? does that even make sense? The reality is this throughout the gospels Jesus warns of the deceitfulness of riches ( not poverty) yes the scriptures speak about poverty and that we should be good stewards of the money that we have and not getting into debt etc but even that isn't stated as a sin in the Bible.  we really need to be careful about what we say is a sin  and putting our personal perspective on God's word

  33. Hmm, I do believe so scriptures are in order which is above opinion. The sin of poverty is no directed to the poor but to those that is successful and do not help the poor. Deuteronomy 10:18 He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the alien, giving him food and clothing. Deuteronomy 15:11 There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land. Joshua 1:14-15, 1 Samuel 2:7-8 The LORD sends poverty and wealth; he humbles and he exalts. He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes and has them inherit a throne of honor. ..There are dozens more like this you guys should really read your bible or understand the Spirit of Gods Word. Romans 12:13 Share with God's people who are in need. Practice hospitality. 1 Timothy 5:3 Give proper recognition to those widows who are really in need. James 2:15-17 Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. And my favorite: 1 John 3:17-18 If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. To God be the glory In Jesus the Christ Amen!!

  36. Understanding the Spirit and the Nature of the "WORD IN FLESH"  many of you associate blessings and prosperity with "Acquiring Assets" only and sometimes money is a curse in the scriptures: The rich young ruler is one example...Ironically it's not listed as the fruits or gifts of the Holy Spirit ( certainly God can bless financially but not everyone)... The bible says every good and "PERFECT" gift comes from God.. I just think we have to be very careful to agree without testing the scriptures...Remember the early church and Paul needed financial help.1 Corinthians 9:1-14,
So why would God  urge for the poor to be Protected, Encouraged, Helped, Dedicated to, Lifted up if poverty is a sin? Savior of the poor (Psalm 34:6, 109:31), Provider of the poor (Psalm 68:10, 146:7, Isaiah 41:17), Rescuer of the poor (I Sam 2:8, Psalm 35:10, 72:4, 12-14, Isaiah 19:20, Jeremiah 20:13), ..Not all poor are Lazy, greedy, squandered, and undeserving...And even then there is still Time For Grace.

  40. I just arrived at this conclusion myself and googled it to see if anyone agreed with me. The reason I realise that poverty is a sin is because God has provided for me to be abundant in my life. In order to receive all the blessings God has promised, I need to be seeking the kingdom of God and His righteousness (Matthew 6:33). So since I am still materially poor, clearly I am missing the mark in some way, I am living in sin so I need to examine my life to find out exactly how and where. Then I can repent and request the renewal of my mind in this area and collect on God's promise. Simple!

  41. I must add that I do not class people born into poverty as "sinners". I am talking about myself, an educated person with the skills and abilities to earn a decent living. In the context of MY life and how, in someway, I am not using all the God-given gifts at my disposal, in this sense, I am definitely "living in sin".

  42. In Jesus' time the vast majority of people were struggling to meet their basic needs - one estimate I saw said that 94% of the world's population were living in extreme poverty.  That wasn't a sin.  The sin that Jesus confronted the most was the sin of the wealthy, or of greed... And it was greed and desire for power/wealth that put Jesus on the cross.  Sin follows wealth... and it is so terrible because most of the wealthy don't even realise that they are in the midst of sin simply because they aren't doing anything to take care of the poor.  When I say wealthy, I don't mean the rich, I mean the average citizen of the 'western world.'
It can be argued that Jesus planned on being homeless - "the son of man has no where to lay his head..." If Christians are to be Christ followers, followers of his example, then poverty has got be familiar to us, familiar enough that we know people who are struggling with poverty - we aren't just doing something to make a difference, we are walking with them as they struggle, doing what we can in order to undo the oppression they are facing.
It can also be argued that the poor are poor so that they may be blessed.  It is not a sin for them to be poor, to lose hope and struggle - it is a sin when the wealthy aren't there to offer hope.  No one said we were "born to be rich" or that any "prosperty" would be promised to us.  Do you imagine that the earliest Jesus followers were expecting all their problems to go away as they started following Jesus?  Most of them expected that they would be murdered for choosing to follow and that they would struggle with extreme poverty.  Doing well with money tells you nothing about whether someone is "missing the mark."

  43. To me, a Christian that doesn't believe in prosperity hasn't invested the time and effort in what God has in store for them. INSTEAD, people belittle God with their context of thinking and creating a whole different God that suits their faith, style of living & daily routine. In other words, some Christians do not want to transcend in faith and become the CHANNEL OF BLESSING to people in need.
You can find ALOT of Prosperity verses as there are Love, Hope, Peace, Joy verses. Take Deut. 8:18 for example...God hasn't only commanded to remember Him, because it is He who has given us power to obtain wealth, but ALSO REAFFIRMING His promises to OUR FOREFATHERS. Randy Gage and the lot of us have our heads on right.
Keep up the faith! I like it! (y)

  44. @Rodney I LIKE THE WAY YOU THINK! 🙂 Bless you for your wisdom! 🙂
Better yet! GLORY TO GOD! Some people here actually got their head on right!

  45. Well now I know why many Christians have become blind. It is because they they believe by serving God is to see how much they can get out of God and not how much they can give back to God for the high price He paid for us by offering His beloved Son. Any person who measures God's Grace with the value of worldly treasures, must re-evaluate the belief in God because they reject the Truth of God entirely. Lazurus who lay before the rich man's gate was poor and helpless, but he was taken up into Abrahams bosom. What happened to the rich man when he died? Do not change the Living Truth of God into a lie.

  47. Love this! It's out God-given right to become rich. If you look at the world God created around us, he’s created everything in abundance. When a seed is planted, it grows a plant and that plant sows plenty more seeds – and the cycle continues and plants grow abundantly. Also, our universe is ever expanding. If we live with a limited mentality, we're not acting in accordance with the laws of the universe, which God has instated. We must believe for more and expect more because we deserve more!

  48. Foxes have dens to live in, and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place even to lay his head.
You know the generous grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. Though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor.
Are you seriously calling Jesus Christ a sinner??

  49. Stupid
Some of us stood up fir Him and were fired. Unemployment ran out. It's not my fault. God id absolutely directing this and it is not sin nor a curse. But i do see wealthy prosperity gurus as sin.
Book of acts, they wanted to fellowship so much and be together, they sold stuff brought the loot to be given to needs of others. Jews share and give to each other. You dont find them on food stamps, housing projects poor. This is why gentile churches are going under ss they should. Psdtors getting rich and you don't even know your flock.

    1. Very wealthy to be able to always feed the crowd that was following him ,ask yourself why he had Judas as his treasurer if he had no money

  50. God has given us, everyone what it takes to be rich/poor,if you believe and choose to apply/not to apply God's word, what ever you receive you are to be praised/blamed for it,,,,,Every thing has been commited into your hands, even the power of death and Life are on your pams,,,the word of God says if a man cannot take care/feed' of 'his household in any wise,he is an infidel,,,If povery is not a sin,,why would God wished that above all that we should prosper in wealth even as our Soul prospers in health,,,and He further said,What ever we lay our hands to do ,,,that would prosper,,,,Deut;8:18,,,,A little folding of hands, poverty creeps in,,,so it is a sin if you fold your hand, that will eventually brings poverty,,,If I may ask,,whose word shall we now obey? God or man'swisdom?,when you leave to claim the promises of God ,you will definitely become what you want to be,,,,Yes the Bible says, the poor will not cease to be in the land,,,who would like to be the poor? It is a curse to be poor,,,The Lord Jesus says He shall cause you to inherit the hidden riches of the earth,,,There shall be a suppernatural transfer of all the riches of the heathen to the children of Abraham,of which 'am one ,I don't know of You,,,,Believe the word of God(promises)and hold unto them and thats faith,,,,,Ironically I was the one that googled this question yesterday 20/12 2017,,,Is poverty a sin? from the internet to see if I can have a result,,bc I was writing on something ,,,surprisingly I came across Randy Gage's write-up,,,If it is more better blessed to give than to receive,,the poor is the beggar and is the receiver,,the rich is the giver and is the blessed,,,Have you forgoten that even the little the poor has shall taken and be given to him that has (the rich),,,,,Therefore strive to enter the narrow way,,,its only those strive to make their ways prosperous shall sit with the kings the palace/feasts,,,but let your endeafours be a righteous one,,,,,,,,,,,

  51. I have four degrees and even one in metaphysics - I'm as poor as anybody could ever be - even with my extensive education and hard work (when I could actually have a job - being diabetic all my life makes gainful employment impossible) I've come to the conclusion that it doesn't matter how educated you or how hard you work you won't have success unless God allows it and He only blesses those He truly loves

  52. The sin of poverty is in the oppression of others by the greed of the wealthy. Very few people become wealthy by honest means. There is absolutely nothing righteous or divine when one gathers more than one needs, especially when one takes more than their fair share.

  53. You have found a creative and interesting way to twist compassion for the poor into helping the undeserving, by even redefining the commonly understood definition of sin.

  54. What a heretic message from the pit of hell!

Lord have emercy on this materialistic and self seeking, depraved generation!

      RJ

      IMHO!

      Lori
