“Friday Filosophy” 6/03/2022 (Information Overload)

Happy Freakin’ Friday!

Greetings from O-Town this week, where I’m conducting a leadership training.  It’s time again for our chat on a subject that I’m thinking about – and believe you might want to think about as well. And what I’m thinking about now is access to information.

It wasn’t that long ago when the surest gateway to live a prosperous life was access to more and better information.  Information was mostly a luxury reserved for only the privileged and wealthy. You can make the argument that the progression of humanity has directly correlated to the ability and ease to acquire more information.

Information opened the window to a whole new world in ways both minor and monumental.  Now you can know the dealer’s retail profit on the car model you want to buy before you even go to the lot.  We’ve learned that lobotomies and leeches don’t provide healing, egg yolks don’t cause heart attacks, and you don’t catch AIDS from monkeys, homosexuals, and Haitians.  In fact, if you choose to, you can access all the information you need to consume a diet that promotes optimal health and wellness.  Whether you desire the wisdom of Rumi and Marcus Aurelius, the genius of Lise Meitner and Marie Curie, or the literary gifts of Whitman and Thoreau – they all are instantly accessible at your fingertips.

Decade after decade, as we became able to access more information, we were able to translate that into a better standard of living.  Until we no longer could.

We’ve now reached the point of diminishing returns.  Our access to so much information has become a limiting check on the growth of humanity.  I’ll posit that is happening for two reasons:

Life-enhancing, enlightening, and prosperous information is still out there.  We’re just ignoring most of it because we’ve become mindless puppets to computer algorithms, mind viruses, and the need to feel busy all the time.  To become more prosperous requires the self-discipline to be mindful of the quality of information you allow into your life, and knowing when you need stillness instead.

Thought of the Day: When you seek to accomplish anything epic or extraordinary, you will face an army of thousands, desperate to maintain mediocrity.  You are always outnumbered, but never outgunned.  Standing alone, armed only with your vision, conviction, and belief – you can defeat them.
