Be or Do?

Posted By: Randy GageFebruary 10, 2011

Great discussion taking place on the last post, Prosperity Is the Way. The main point was that you don’t find the way to prosperity; you BE prosperity.

Now I also said that this is not to be confused with sitting on your ass watching “The Secret” and expecting everything to manifest out of thin air for you.  So how do we reconcile these two seemingly conflicting thoughts?

Here’s my take on it.  Let me know yours.

Manifesting prosperity still takes work and effort.  But work and effort won’t work very well if you don’t have prosperity consciousness.  When you have the right consciousness, you attract the people and circumstances that allow you to manifest your good.

And when you have the right prosperity consciousness, it doesn’t matter much what job or business you are in.  You’ll still find a way to make it happen.  If you’re an electrician, you’ll end up owning an electrical contracting company with 40 radio-controlled vans driving around town.  If you have a simple gift shop, you’ll end up franchising the concept all over the country.

When you develop true prosperity consciousness, the details don’t matter.

And getting that consciousness isn’t about learning, but unlearning mind viruses and dysfunctional behavior and getting back to your true nature.  That’s my story and I’m sticking with it!

  1. Yes it is a combination. Most people spend too much time doing (the wrong things)and not enough time being. It is the being that brings us to balance and it is the being that crystalizes the doing(just like a laser) into the cutting edge of action that manifests our desires.

  2. Jim Rohn famously said "If you want more, you must become more".

Instead of asking what can I do to get this job, ask who do I need to become to get this job?

That totally changes the focus of how you approach something. Instead on manifesting that one detail, manifest the engine behind it and it will be so much more effective.

Clear the garbage, and the water will flow more naturally.

Darren Hardy tells a story of when he was looking to get married, he wrote down all the qualities of the woman he wants to marry. Then he sat down and listed who he needed to become to get that woman. Pretty powerful method.

Of course, as you said Randy, even if you know you need to become, it won't happen until you become it and that needs some doing.

    1. Everything is in motion all the time.

The world doesn't wait for you to suddenly become more.

American culture is also obsessed with youth. How the hell can someone become successful if they have not done everything to work towards who they are from a young age?

I'm 29, and while there are success stories like Moby and Susan Boyle in music who succeeded when older, most people that succeed at anything do it much younger than I am. I feel on an intuitive level I should keep going, but I doubt why I bother even listening to my heart.

I work on things every night, and have taken to connecting with others online and in person to learn more, but I sometimes feel very stupid attempting to do something that most people have as a flight of fancy and that a lot of people fail at.

      1. Thomas,

“The world doesn’t wait for you to suddenly become more”.

Oh Thomas … I disagree. The world is not only waiting, but NEEDING, for you to show up in all your brilliance! You have a unique way of expressing in the world that is like one important piece of a huge jigsaw puzzle … and the picture isn’t completed quite the same way without your contribution! Do not give up.

When I first read your post, I breezed right over the part where you shared your age … 29. I imagined you writing as someone much older … like me! 😉 When I went back and re-read the number I have to tell you I smiled. Take a deep breath and stop to think about the fact that some of us weren’t even consciously seeking our ‘passion’ at your age – Randy has shared many times that he was thirty-something and selling his furniture to feed himself! Look where he is now – leading others to break free financially for themselves. What if he had thrown his hands up in the air and said … “I am too old to become successful now and my dreams are just a flight of fancy?” Huge loss for all of us!

Love, you are way ahead of the game in many ways! You know what MOVES you inside … that is the first step! Now the work for you is to quiet those doubting internal voices and …. EXCUSES … and be open to the opportunities to show up for you to use your gifts to make this world a better place – in whatever way they show up.

Think outside the box and give the Universe a little bit wider filter through which to poor your blessings! Expand your horizons and make beautiful music without expecting to become the next ‘success story’ and I’m betting your story will be richer than you might have ever imagined.

Waiting for your good stuff …

        K

        1. That is part of my problem actually.

I keep trying so hard to be perfect so I can be successful at it, that I don't make anything good.

I also feel this need to make up for lost time.
I've stumbled quite a lot and have little to show for my life.

          1. "I keep trying so hard to be perfect..."

Welcome to a very common human disease. 🙂 Many of us here have suffered the same. You are definitely not alone in this.

Perhaps while you are getting busy getting creative, the juices might flow more freely if you strive for personal excellence instead of perfection???

Cut yourself some well-deserved slack and have FUN. It's been my experience that the magic is usually hanging around just on the other side of joy!

      2. Randy and All, with your permission, I'd like to post a piece from someone else, it just came in my inbox and fits the question of Thomas so well, imo.
"Life comes one moment at a time, giving us the opportunity to start over again in any one of those moments."

        - J.Sewell Perkins

All too often people reach a certain age at which they somehow manage to decide that their golden moment has passed them by. They're sure it's too late for them. If you're one of those people, let me remind you that at age 52 Ray Kroc started what became the McDonald's empire. At age 64 Dave Thomas, without benefit of even a high school diploma, started Wendy's, which became the third largest fast-food franchise operation.

How many opportunities do you think Kroc and Thomas missed on their way to mega success? At 60 when most men and women his age are gearing up to gear down and retire, Dave Thomas made the decision to go for his dream. Several years before Thomas passed away he got his GED because he wanted to set an example for young people who had not graduated high school.

        Larissa

      3. Dude, as we have spoken many times in the past, ya know what I think of you and your music, I think it is fantastic and I think a lot can be done.

And yes, the world is waiting for you. Have you read the book Tribes by Seth Godin? We need you to lead.

Sometime it will require advancing on a smaller scale, sometime the opportunity is there on a bigger scale but don't work so hard that you don't see what is there.

Being presence is probably the biggest gift you can give yourself right now.

Be and Do. Become more and then you will find what needs to be done.

As the others say, don't let the age hold you back if that is what holding you back. Don't let the time of what I could have done hold you back from what you can become.

You have it. Just decide and become.

As for me, Randy knows I want to be a speaker on a huge scale. I'm 27. I wanted to start when i was 20. So what. I start now and I will become what I need to become to do what needs to be done.

        Be Bless.

          1. Please read it as it may help show somewhat why we need YOU to lead us today.

And nope, that is not strange at all, you just help prove the point to yourself.

Rock it out brother. Be and Do.

  3. Hi Randy...
I love the way you explained how prosperity consciousness works, and how it can manifest in which ever vocation you find yourself in. Its a mindset, and a state of being.
*sigh...I will get there soon enough and I will shake your hand one day! 😀

    Thanks!

  4. Randy, could you give us one or two practical examples, please? How did you start when decided to BE the prosperity yourself? What were your first steps? Or the way you'd suggest to do it based on the experiences of other people that you met. I'm sure you see and hear the stories all the time as you are tuned to successful habits, while many others are not. Thank you very much.

      1. I just came back to say thank you for not answering my last two questions before))) I got it! I got all the answers I needed, myself, with the help of the Universe (as I choose to name this force). I'm planning to attend as many seminars of yours as I can.

I'm so excited to get through that point where I was stuck and felt helpless! I feel powerful now, it's so amazing!

  5. An idea is a seed. It will only grow when you water it with actions.

I believe that the how will reveal itself as you go along the path reaching your destination. The truth is, you will never arrive because you always move further once you reached your goal.

  6. Randy-

I find when I am "being" prosperous, when I am on purpose, I couldn't sit on my ass even if I tried as I am being inspired and pulled into right action. Is this the case for you as well? When I am in this space, I can do no wrong, as it is inspired action, which comes from love and abundance, not fear and lack. THE biggest thing that supports me is beginning each day in prayer and meditation. I also take short "Presence" breaks through the day, and read inspiring material prior to turning out the light. My life is not without challenges, but I am in such a better place. And affirming prosperity and abundance on this blog feeds me richly. For that opportunity that you provide all of us, I am truly grateful.

  7. Yes, you attract what you project. And yes, you can work hard and still be "Dumb, Sick & Broke..."
But how is it that you get prosperity conscious?
How do you know what prosperity is?
How is that you know that your mind is programmed with negativity?
    How do you unlearn?
How do you know what your true nature is?
Why do you have this site, your book, and DVDs? From business point of view, if there was no demand for knowledge, you would be out of business.
The answer to those questions will definitelly not come from the sky. And although you can ask the Universe a question (if you know how), but the only answer you'll get maybe in the form of an idea, a thought, a suggestion from a complete stranger, a sign, a book, etc. Regardless of how answer came to you, the final step is yours - you take action or not. But to take action you need more information about the answer you received. To get information you must search for it and know where to search. And once you find it, you learn and apply it.
You get prosperity conscious by observing that there are things in life that you would like to have. If you did not see those things, you wouldn't know that they exist and consider your present life style prosperous. It is through observation that we learn when we are babies and for the rest of our lives.
The word PROSPEROUS is just a word. Its meaning had to be learned.
You know that your mind is programmed with negativity when you hear or read something that makes more sense than your present belief.
You unlearn by relearning. The process of thinking good thoughts must also be learned. But thinking alone will not change your state of mind. You must learn how to think productively. It's not a given.
How do you know what your nature is? - By judging your values. But than how do you know what is right or wrong? That information is also learned through various sources. Although I am not a follower of any religious order, I do respect the Bible for some of its instruction. Another source would be from your parents. And of course your emotional state will let you know when you did the right thing, by rewarding you with the feeling of pride and self-respect. Or quilt, fear, regret and doubt will set in when the wrong act was conducted.
So no, I do not buy into contradiction in the thought process because it's illogical.

      1. Hi Randy,
I typically read several books at a time, and when I started yours, I could not put it down. What I found fascinating was your writing style. No nonsense and straight to the point. The whole book was a breath of fresh air because no one writes like this anymore. And although you wrote that a reader should not agree with everything stated in the book, I found that everything in it makes sense. So thank you for your thoughts and courage to express them.

  8. I think your Abundance hammer hit the memes on the head with this post.
I do agree with the unlearning, if I learn the right thing but don't stop the old thing then I'm still the same with new knowledge. Kinda like being lost in the forest then finding a compass well now I'm lost knowing where north is.
To me the "being part" is Faithing it truly 100% knowing feeling and living like you are already there.

  9. wow... loving these threads - learning from so many walks of life and

and, me too (responding to an upper post).... would love to hear of some your examples randy...

for me... i find "stepping into and riding the flow" is and can be so very powerful... and still believe that how "i feel" (resonating or vibrating) reallly does drive my bus....

...when i stop worrying about what i "need" and just connect is what i already "have" and "appreciate".... wow stuff just happens.... (((o)))

    (((o)))

  10. It's funny how I've always had a degree of 'prosperity consciousness' but wasn't aware of it. For instance: "I've always had a problem buying stuff based on how much they cost". My take on this is if it makes your heart pound then the price doesn't matter. I could give you an array of examples like these...

With regards to unlearning mind viruses my take is if you learn a new positive belief then you won't have to worry about the old negative ones. They'll just dissolve naturally.

Prosperity to me is knowing that I'm taken care of no matter what. It means the ability to realize when the right opportunities presents themselves in my life & taking the massive action it requires to make them happen.

  11. Hey Randy,
Sometimes it's just a matter of getting silent. I believe that true abundance is something we are born with. It can manifest in an endless array of ways. Believing you have to strive for something creates separation from the goal. All we really need to do is get silent and align our consciousness with the goal - which is already achieved. Sitting by and doing nothing is great for meditation. Other than that, you're not experiencing a he'll of a lot by sitting around. Experiental prosperity is what we were born to remember. Thanks mate.

  12. I think one of the best ways to have a prosperity consciousness is to give..

By giving, ur brain gets the message that u have lots, u indeed are prosperous when u give money

No matter how low ur bank account is, start giving..

    1. In my opinion, a very effective way to identify and unlearn mind-viruses is to have a coach/mentor. Having "outside eyes" on your life is incredibly powerful. Virtually all successful people have coaches and mentors in many different areas of their lives. Be sure the person you choose as a coach or mentor is getting the results you want to have. There are alot of people calling themselves a coach that are Dumb, Sick & Broke. You get what you pay for.

  13. I find it's the mind viruses that are the biggest problem...which is why I often keep my dreams a secret from some so that their input doesn't smash them to pieces before they have a chance to germinate.

I find that when your in the right place the desires you have are actually given to you by God/universe because "they" WANT you to succeed in them...so here's what I've experienced so far:

    1. bring yourself into a mindset where you feel good about yourself and others. This can be done with your imagination or by going out into nice places or just experiencing life until something inspires you. This is the receiving the "dream" part

    2. realize your part in the dream and what you need to do to be your potential to achieve it.

    3. Be with the experience of it as if you are already living the dream. Meditate with this, visualize it. Ask for your mind set to be brought to this place when you loose your way.

    4. Mantras/prayers help with mind viruses. Sometimes a before and after prayer helps too if there is something that makes you anxious.

    THEN..

    5. You receive inspirations, ideas. These you do not create...they come to you. And somtimes waiting for them is hard...but I know that when you do wait they do come. When you are impatient and fill yourself up with extra activity rather than do what you need to do and wait...then the clutter blocks it and gets in the way. I know this but I still get messed up here.

When you do receive the inspiration..it is soooo important to follow through with it because it leads you to your next; it raises the quality of your energy so you can receive more instructions. ...you can tell they are important not by the size of the mission but by the love and excitement in them. They feel really good. Could be just to call a friend and say I was thinking about you and appreciate you...or to go for a walk or to a certain place...or to clean your house or something really big too...but it's the feeling of it and the love. These no matter how small are so important.

    6. know what you want so that when opportunities come you can tell them apart from diversions.

    7. Invest in opportunities

    8. Give thanks when things click and work out. Always follow up success with taking time out for gratitude, be with it, be thankful.

    9. Repeat.

Hardest part for me is saying no when so many wonderful opportunities are out there or to wait and be patient when there's many but none feel like a YES.

  14. When dubito ergo cogito ergo sum (I doubt therefore I think, therefore I am)becomes cogito ergo sum (I think, therefore I am), don't you finally manifest it yourself. Descartes wasn't so dumb. Know who you are and be who you know you are.

  15. Debate? I don't think there is any debate!

I have been in the training and consulting business for almost 20 years focused on sales and sales management. Everyone wants to know what it takes to perform and to get others to perform.

About 8 or 9 years ago we started using a survey tool that measures 23 core skills and core competencies. It was the missing piece for me in determining what predicted performance. Out of the 23 there were 5 critical skills, core skills, who people were on the inside that clearly made a difference.

    For example, focusing on sales performance;

#1 - resiliency or the ability to bounce back from adversity. The best of the best bounce back from adversity faster than the average and below average performers.

#2 - continuous learning - the best of the best never stop pursuing the knowledge they need to stay at the top!

#3 - personal accountability - the best of the best take total responsibility for who, what and where they are in life. Average and below average performers always have an excuse or someone to blame for why they aren't the best!

Skipping the other two critical skills I would simply ask anyone ... if you possessed and mastered just the three "core skills" listed above, then how good would you be at whatever you chose to do, including selling?

I would go one step farther and would suggest that if you mastered these "being" skills that you would automatically go out and pick up the "doing" skills.

    Just my .02!

    Jim Jacobus

  16. For me, it is about the “BE” … but I think that the ‘BE’ fits very well in ‘BE-lieve’.

You experience your prosperity once you truly ‘believe’ that you are worthy, deserving, valuable and you seek to share that with the world. It first takes seeing through a different set of eyes – and then you are shown how to best use your hands and move your feet in a way that will ‘prosper’ everyone on the planet … and YOU are definitely one of those ‘everyones’! I don’t think we are meant to ‘work ‘hard’, I think we are meant to work ‘passionately’ – and there’s a big difference in the two!

It’s a highly repeated quote, but I will offer it again here because of the truth in it …

“You will ‘see’ it when you ‘believe’ it.” ~ Dr. Wayne Dyer

One foot in front of the other ... step into belief.

    K

    1. Work passionately - I love it. It's a great come-back for those who ask me "are you working hard?". Now I can respond with "no, I'm working passionately!".

  17. My take on this is that your recipe is not quite complete: Manifesting prosperity still takes work and effort with prosperity consciousness.
I think there is something very integral missing. You know when you are around someone in "prosperity" mode, they have two more qualities, excitement and enthusiasm.
So my success formula would be: Manifesting prosperity still takes work and effort drenched with enthusiasm, excitement and prosperity consciousness.

    Have an awesome one!!

  18. Jack Foley I agree with your comments on giving. I started giving a certain percentage of my income away when I had a paper route at 5 years old. I have been blessed in all areas of my life a thousand fold.

  19. I do agree that with true prosperity consciousness you attract the right opportunities, key people, and things definitely seem to flow on a path to greater and greater success. I don't necessarily agree though on the statement that when you have the right prosperity consciousness it doen't matter what type of work or job you are in. We need to align ourselves with the right opportuntiy and atmosphere. There are "dead end" jobs that people take to just get by. I have had a few of those. Besides the fact that certain jobs don't provide a path to advance, you are also actually in a situation where most others around you are in a survival mode and you are exposed to that mentality daily. I believe you need to have a vision and align yourself with the right opportunities. I personally worked in menial jobs with the mentality that I could overcome all odds to prosper in that environment, but it wasn't until I made a change (which at the time was risky) to something totally different that actually did provide the right opportunity, did I begin to experience the success I was looking for. And yes, it is a journey. I constantly work on increasing and growing my vision and prosperity consciousness.

    1. RJ- You raise a good point about whether it matters or not what type of work one does. The additional clarity is that one with a prosperity consciousness doesn't choose to be in a "dead end" job or one without opportunity. It just doesn't happen. You went from a menial job to a better one as a result of your expanding consciousness. This is the true change you made. Changing jobs was a result of it.

      1. JG I concur. 18mths ago I took an "easy" job, thinking it would be a lessor distraction, so I could put my main effort into another project. What I found, is that the lack of stimulation or challenge in that job, transcended into the project as well. I believe in order to BE conscious, you have to be surrounded by things/sayings/reminders that keep prompting you to be focused on prosperity till your thinking and actions become automatic, drawing you more forward to prosperity.

I understand it takes 6 weeks of repetition to break a bad habit.

This week I was asked my fee to do a large project. With my constant memory joggers, I had that conversation with myself and then replied with confidence with a large fee. I secured the project. My previous lack mindset would have had me drop the fee to get the job. The only thing I did, was stay silent till they responded. I realised right through the negotiation process where my thinking should be for prosperity. I am expanding my consciousness and I am a sponge for learning more.

  20. I was having a discussion with a fellow investor who now coach's and he is a very spiritual guy. He's been asking the question, like so many, why so many people never succeed. It all comes down to, what he likes to call, the click moments. It's different for everyone, but for those of us who have experienced it, it's when in an instant, it clicks. Why doesn't this happen to everyone? I think he hit the nail on the head when he said, it's all about surrender. We all think we are in control but the truth is we are not. Once we realize this, everything changes. We try so hard, we have great intentions, we do our manifesting and on and on, but until we truly surrender from a spiritual perspective, the gift will never be given. That's my take and I like Randy am sticking to it.

  21. yes i think Being is the most important as out from it flows action (do). Prosperous Actions can exist without the prosperous being but their will be no prosperous results and if the propserous result comes will be temporary. Being comes from more than just engagement of mind.....eg reading and listening. Being comes from consistent engagement of nervous system; intellect; heart.......this will build the cellular memory so ur entire body knows it and not just ur head. When 'unlearning' there will be physiological effects like withdrawal systems as ur cellular memory is telling u to do what its conditioned to do and you will not be doing it. There will be a tug of war between ur mind and ur body like when smokers are giving up. Unlearning is about reclaiming the essence of who u are. About shedding away all the toxicities that may be choking your life

  22. I very much believe that prosperity is un-learnt as we grow up. We buy into a lot of stuff that doesn't serve us. For me, my focus is very much on identifying disempowering beliefs and reprogramming with empowering ones. Once the disempowering stuff starts to lose its grip, dreams aren't so difficult to focus on any more. The law of attraction fuels this virtuous cycle. You start attracting different people and different circumstances. Inspiration then flows and once that hits, I too find it difficult to sit still and do nothing. It's then time for that passionate work that KimbraLee was talking about. I've been in that place even in a job scenario. I'm on cloud nine doing the work and walk out at the end of the day feeling thrilled with what I have accomplished.

  23. Excellent Post Randy and Good Advice from All who took the time to share, Thank You!

    I don't remember where I found this but it made sense to me back then and when such discussions occur, it always comes in crystal clear;

"There is no way to Prosperity, Prosperity is the Way"

One can actually insert a number of attributes into this sentence and it works.

For example; There is no way to Happiness, Happiness is the Way!

And one of my favorites; There is no way to Love, Love is the Way!

    Keep the Fire Burning!

    Cya,

    Rock

  24. A little word of encouragement to Thomas Edward Merk. If you feel discouraged at 29, ask that wonderful question " what is good about this" ( apparently bad situation). You have realised you really want to succeed - rather than focusing on the fact that you are not where you'd like to be turn the dissatisfaction into being open for the idea you can transform into success - Jim Rohn talks about turning frustration into fascination ( just a more effective way to communicate with yourself). Become fascinated with success, prosperity or whatever you are aiming for and how you can be all you want to be. Remember it's about the journey not the destination and today is all you have. Be all you can today with what you've got. 29 is young for many people ( everything is relative). In Napolean Hill's Think and Grow Rich ( the entrepreneurs bible) he has a whole chapter about sexual transmutation where he talks about how many men were too distracted by their flesh until their forties and then when they learned the power of focus many people met big success after 40. So, my dear you are just a spring chicken and have lots of time to fulfill your dreams. Enjoy the ride in the meantime!

  25. Randy,

Without having the proper internal map, all the action in the world will not work. It's like water running off a duck's back. Get the internal map right and the actions will become apparent as events and people show up.

    Karen

  26. For me it is about balancing faith and responsibility, faith by holding the belief I will succeed when not knowing exactly how to do it; along with the responsibility to take action, any action, that moves me in the general direction of my desired success. Prosperity consciousness is akin to the chemical process of precipitation, causing a desire outcome to manifest. When two chemicals come into contact in the presence of a third, a precipitate or new substance comes into existence. By having the faith to continually hold the goal in my mind combined with the willingness to persistently take action in the direction of the goal I set forces into motion that seem to be like unexpected helping hands that reach out to help clarify my way to success. You can see more in a chart I've put together that defines what I call the 7 Step Cycle of Creativity

  27. Hey there! Someone in my Myspace group shared this website with us so I came to have a look. I’m definitely enjoying the way you write. I’m book-marking! Excellent style and design.

      For example, focusing on sales performance;

      I don't remember where I found this but it made sense to me back then and when such discussions occur, it always comes in crystal clear;
